Competency-Based Graduate Programs

Graduate training to become a researcher in Community Health Sciences is more than completing courses and a thesis. In order to better understand how to make the most of your time as a graduate student we have identified 5 roles in CHS research and the associated competencies (skills, attitudes and knowledge) in each area.

These roles include:

  • researcher
  • communicator
  • scholar
  • collaborator; and
  • research project manager.

Meeting the Foundation Competencies is an expectation for all students. Given a student's previous research, academic or employment experiences, he/she may have already acquired some of these competencies before beginning the program.

Competencies can be developed through a variety of avenues including courses, seminars, readings, mentorship, supervision and thesis work.
