Research Networks

Having their origin in scholarly conferences organized by the Institute
as early as 1977, Research Networks evolved as formats to meet the
needs of interdisciplinary discourse in the humanities. The formation
of Research Networks allow the Institute, in response to interests of
faculty members and members of the community, to bring together
scholars of different backgrounds from all parts of Canada and
frequently from abroad. The Research Networks typically focus on topics
of interest to more than one discipline, and aim at engaging scholars
in a two- to three-year project, in order to encourage sustained and
focused discussion of a complex theme. Unlike conventional conference,
where speakers present their separate and finished papers to larger
audiences, Research Networks encourage a focused group of
multidisciplinary researchers to discuss drafts of working papers with
others involved in the network, and to generate finished papers that
reflect the interdisciplinary exchange and cross-pollination of their
discussions. Research networks normally lead to scholarly books, and
have on several occasions provided the material for lay editions based
on the theme of the research network.
