Calgary Institute
for the Humanities
The Calgary Institute for the Humanities (CIH) was established at the University of Calgary in 1976 to foster advance study and research in a broad range of subject areas reflecting its mult-disciplinary and multi-faculty orientation. It supports research in traditional Humanities disciplines such as languages and literature, history, religious studies, philosophy, as well as in philosophical and historical aspects of the social sciences, arts, sciences, and professional studies. The humanities are not conceived as a specific group of academic disciplines, but as forms of study that examine what is human - typically guided by literature, history, social and physical settings, artifac. visual and performing arts. Programs of the Institute include fellowship appointments, strategic research projects, and community partnerships.
The Calgary Institute for the Humanities invites applications - by students currently holding a Program for Undergraduate Research Experience (PURE) award - for an Undergraduate Student Fellowship to be held at the Institute for up to eight months beginning September 1, 2012. The Fellowship provides an opportunity to refine and develop the PURE award research being carried out during May-August 2012. The research for this Fellowship should involve a topic that reflects the academic mandate of the Institute as outlined above. The Fellowship is not renewable.
The Undergraduate Student Fellow will have an office in the Institute with limited administrative support. The Fellow will be expected to share their research in an in-house CIH seminar, and to involve themselves in the community of scholars working at the Institute. In particular, the Fellow will be encouraged to present their research at a conference or in a publication as a result of the appointment at CIH. The Institute's support should be acknowledged in all oral presentations and written publications that result from the research supported.
Applicants at the time of tenure will be registered as full-time students at the University of Calgary and hold a Programs for Undergraduate Research Experience (PURE) Award during 2012. The terms of appointment will accommodate degree program requirements of the Fellow during the fall and winter terms of 2012-2013.
The stipend is $3,500 Canadian.
