Faculty Research Interests

A Manual of Research Information for Faculty Members has been created by the University of Calgary's Research Services department which describes the broad range of services they provide. This resource was created for new faculty but might be equally useful for established researchers.

Many programs bridge the following five broad areas, and the nature of these "bridges" is continually changing, as befits a vigorous department.

The Department of Chemistry has a healthy mixture of fundamental and applied research programs. Overall it has achieved a very good reputation at a national level, and it has attained international standing in some areas. We compete successfully for large amounts of research funding from a variety of sources; in recent years the amount of this support from external sources alone is approaching $3.5 million annually. The Department houses Alberta Sulphur Research Ltd., a non-profit, industry-funded unit which contributes in a very significant and positive way to both our research efforts and our interactions with local, national and indeed international industry. The commitment to research shown by the Chemistry Department is evidenced by the fact that, with the exception of one person who is Director of the Environmental Science Program, every faculty member in the professorial stream currently holds external support for his or her research.
