ABSTRACT:

The supercapacitor is an emerging technology that promises to play an important role in meeting the demands of electronic devices and systems in the future. Supercapacitors are devices that can store energy and are used to power hybrid electric vehicles, portable electronic equipment and other devices. Batteries usually offer high energy densities while they are slow when conventional electrolytic capacitors are fast but have low energy densities.  By offering fast charging and discharging rates, as well as the ability to sustain millions of cycles, supercapacitors bridge the gap between batteries and conventional electrolytic capacitors. I will be presenting different types of supercapacitors which are psudocapacitors and double layer capacitors. One of the most interesting materials used is onion-like carbon (OLC) which is originally made from nanodiamond (ND) material. These ND-OLC supercapacitors represent a new generation of devices, approaching the power of electrolytic capacitors, but have an order of magnitude larger energy density. These ND-OLCs show the best performance characteristics till todays date. ND-OLCs addresses the need for microscale energy storage devices in numerous areas, such as wireless sensor networks and biomedical implants.
