will present a seminar entitled:
“Disilenes and Digermenes as Molecular Models for the Reactivity of Dimers on Si- and Ge(100)-2x1 Surfaces”
The functionalization of semiconductor surfaces with organic molecules has attracted much attention over the past two decades. It is surprising to us that the reactivity of the dimers on the reconstructed Si or Ge (100) 2 x 1 surface has often been compared to the chemistry of alkenes rather than that of disilenes or digermenes; we believe that comparisons between the surface reactions and the reactivity of disilenes and digermenes are more
relevant and more informative. In this presentation, I will summarize our studies from the last decade which illustrate that the functionalization of the reconstructed Si or Ge(100) 2 x 1 surface with aldehydes, carboxylic acids, alkynes, nitriles and amides closely parallels the analogous chemistry of disilenes and digermenes and that the chemistry of the molecular systems can be used to guide the surface studies.
