Build it and they will come

I began at the University of Calgary in the Fall of 1965 in the Vice-President (Academic) Office (Dr. Walter Trost) as executive assistant. I sat on the Academic Planning Committee where we hummed and hawed over which logo to choose for the university. It was strongly agreed to accept the one we now have. There was a feeling of excitement and dedication of being on our own, of making the university soar to great heights. It certainly has become a great university.

There were only two buildings on campus—the Administration and Science buildings. The Academic Planning Committee was in the midst of planning five new buildings (I think--Craigie Hall, Education Tower, Library block, Social Sciences and Engineering. They were also planning a ring road going around the university. I remember when I heard they had purchased all the land to the west I thought what in the world would they ever use all that land for. "You build it—they will come!”

It was nice in those days to be able to park in front of your office door and not have to pay for parking.
