Archival Resources for the 40th Anniversary

 

 

The University Archives holds resources that university units may find useful when planning 40th anniversary events.

 

All resources are available in the University Archives unless otherwise specified.
Please allow as much time as possible for your research to enable our staff to provide you with the best possible assistance.

 

Chronology of the University of Calgary’s growth

A chronology covering the years 1905-1990 is published in The University of Calgary: A Place of Vision, University of Calgary Press, 1990. (Click on the thumbnail to see the larger version of a page.)

  • The book was written in celebration of the University’s 25th anniversary and is available in the University Library at call number: LE3 .C32 B67 1990. Additional copies are available for use in the University Archives’ Reading Room.
  • A chronology for the years 1905-2004 is available in the University calendar, 2005-2006, pp. 613-621.

Photographs

Photographs of events at the University of Calgary (1954-1969) are available online on the Alberta Society of Archivists’ website located at http://www.archivesalberta.org/general/database.htm.

  • Choose Alberta InSight / Scan Index (choose “Repository”) / enter “University” / click “Go” / click on blue button next to University of Calgary. The images are protected. Once you find an image you wish to use, please contact the University Archives with the image reference number to order a copy.

Recent photographs of campus are available online at http://archive.ucalgary.ca:591/ImageBank/. If you have a University of Calgary campus card or are accessing the site from a computer on campus you can download these images at 72 dpi.

  • If you need a higher resolution than is available online, these images are available at 300 dpi as well. If you require 5 or fewer images please e-mail your request for the images to the University Archives (uarc@ucalgary.ca). If you require more than 5 images please take note of the cd path for the images you require and borrow the relevant photo cds from our office. Photo cds may be borrowed for up to 2 working days.

The University Archives has a large collection of photographs (150,000 +) which are not available through the means described above. We can search our database for specific terms supplied by clients to meet their needs. Most of these images are available only in black and white and are photonegatives. Images will need to be either printed or scanned to make them available for clients’ projects.

Calendars are good sources of information regarding when faculties, departments and programs were established; required courses for programs; when and what courses were offered by departments; student fees; and academic staff.

Convocation booklets

  • University of Calgary: 1966-2005. These booklets list graduates at each convocation by department and degree, and give details of each honorary degree recipient. Honorary degree recipients are listed online (1966-2005) at http://www.ucalgary.ca/pubs/calendar/current/Who/HonoraryDegreeRecipients2.htm
  • University of Alberta, Calgary campus: 1948-1965 – admission ceremonies, closing exercises and fall convocation booklets.

Administrative records of campus units

Descriptions of records held in the Archives are available online at http://www.ucalgary.ca/archives/institutional.html. These descriptions include short administrative histories of the unit, and a scope and content note of the records. Staff may find these descriptions useful when gathering basic information about the history of their unit.

 

File level descriptions of administrative records are available in hard copy in the Archives’ Reading Room. Please come to the Reading Room during reference hours to access the lists.

 

Administrative records of university units are accessible only by officers of the creating unit until 25 years after a file was created. Requests to access records less than 25 years old must be accompanied by a letter from the unit’s head authorizing specific staff members. All files must be accessed in the Archives’ Reading Room: no archival files will be loaned back to creating units.

 

University Reports

A collection of approximately 2000 reports on various topics created for the campus community or other stakeholders.
