The position of the Canadian Writer-in-Residence is a ten-month residency at the University of Calgary for emerging Canadian writers.

The residency provides a unique opportunity for Canadian writers to devote their time to writing and to advancing their writing careers.

While at the university, writers devote 50 per cent of their time to writing and 50 per cent of their time to community activities, including individual manuscript consultations with local writers, public readings and talks, and meeting with school groups.

The program offers writers one of the highest paid residencies in North America. In addition, residents are provided with an office and administrative support.

Manuscript and creative consultations

Manuscript and creative consultations are currently closed. A limited number of creative consultations will be available in late June. Bookings for June creative consultations will be opened in mid-May. If you would like to be notified when bookings open up again, email with the subject line, "June consultations."

Manuscript consultations will begin again in September 2018, when we welcome Liz Howard, our 2018–19 Canadian Writer-in-Residence.

Denise Chong is the 2017-2018 Canadian Writer-in-Residence. Denise will be in residence at the university from Sept. 2, 2017 to June 30, 2018.

Consultations are one hour in length. Denise will meet with writers at any stage in their work both for structured manuscript consultations and for creative consultations to discuss aspects of the creative, research, and writing processes, from earliest stages to completion.

Those with material ready for review and comment may submit up to 10 double-spaced pages of nonfiction or fiction in .doc or .docx format. Those who do not have 10 pages prepared must submit a brief summary (100-200 words) of their project and what they would like to discuss with Denise.

Consultations will take place from September 2017 to June 2018, and must be booked by appointment.
