University of Calgary

About the University of Calgary

Although the University of Calgary is a relatively young institution, it ranks eighth among the Top Ten research universities in Canada today. The institution was founded in 1945 when the Calgary Normal School became a branch of the University of Alberta’s education faculty. Established on its current 213-hectare site in northwest Calgary in 1960, the University gained full autonomy as a degree-granting institution six years later.

Today the main campus has 25 buildings accommodating 16 faculties, 53 departments, more than 30 research institutes and centres, 4,500 academic and support staff, 26,000 full-time undergraduate and graduate students, and 20,000 students in continuing education programs.

This is an exciting and evolving institution: the University of Calgary is one of the first North American universities to respond to a rapidly changing world by redesigning all 83 undergraduate programs
