Travel and study on the Rhine, Germany

My name is Courtney Clark and I have just completed my third year of my undergraduate degree in Urban Studies. I have just turned 21 and I am very interested in Urban Design. I also have a strong interest in international cultures; I enjoy drawing and sketching, and have an ongoing love of travel.

I encountered the Rhine in ’09 field school last fall. Having taken some classes on German language and culture the trip automatically spiked my interest. Its theme however, is also central to the very purpose of my degree; studying sustainable measures and impacts on urban space. This field school looks at the background and development of the Rhine river system as manipulated by its inhabitants and more recent attempts at rehabilitation of its ecosystem. With approximately 25-30 other students from both the UBC and UofC joining me, we will study various locations known for their exemplary sustainable initiatives along the Rhine watershed for a month’s time.

As a student I hope to encounter different cultures and social situations that I am unfamiliar with, getting a chance to observe and report lifestyles that operate within these regions and how sustainable choices affect everyday lives. My final goal is to be able to apply the knowledge I learn from this trip into future work at home.

I can't believe it's almost over!

It seemed like a day ago I was celebrating my birthday in Zurich, and now we have since travelled through Germany and moved on to our second city in the Netherlands. It was a three hour bus ride from Rotterdam to Groningen, the biking capital of the world I believe...at least of Europe for sure.

Sustainable communities

We finished our tour of the famously-green Vauban and there were mixed reviews for both that neighborhood as well as the newly developed Rieselfeld. Personally, I was comparing the two communities to suburbs in Calgary (which aren’t the best examples of urban sustainable development.

A week has passed on our field school and finally we have made it to the famous city of Freiburg, Germany.  One thing I have noticed with Germany is how much easier it is to find internet cafes compared to Switzerland. It is also a lot cheaper, even after considering the conversion from Euro to Canadian, to find cheap food!

Today has been the first day for our group to encounter any kind of precipitation.  To be honest it is a nice relief from hiking through warm sun.

Zinging into Zurich

It seems, so far, that our trip to Zurich has gone off without a hitch.

Flights were on time, everyone got here in one piece and no luggage was lost (thank God).  The weather here has been surprisingly beautiful, and our group has had a chance to get over our jet lag and explore the inner city of Zurich.
