The O'Brien Centre for the Bachelor of Health Sciences

On April 22, 2005, the University of Calgary and the students of the new O’Brien Centre for the Bachelor of Health Sciences (BHSc) Program celebrated the launch of new educational and research facilities in an undergraduate degree unlike any other in the country.

A $5-million gift from Calgary community leaders David and Gail O’Brien was the cornerstone on which the O’Brien Centre for the Bachelor of Health Sciences Program is built. David O’Brien has been a member of the University’s Board of Governors; Gail O’Brien has chaired the Faculty of Medicine’s Dean’s Advisory Council.Entrance area to the O'Brien Centre for the Bachelor of Health Sciences

“By leveraging the O’Brien’s gift, the Faculty of Medicine was able to attract an additional $9 million from Alberta Infrastructure and Transportation to fully construct the O’Brien Centre,” says Dr. Grant Gall, Dean of Medicine. “We are extremely grateful for the support of the O’Briens and the Government of Alberta.”

About $4 million of the O’Brien gift is endowed into the O’Brien Bachelor of Health Sciences Strategic Initiatives Fund to attract and retain the best students for the program. The initiatives include studentship awards, as well as funding for research and work in partnership with the community, and an annual lectureship in health sciences.

Funding support for the O’Brien Centre has also been provided by Sun Microsystems, Fisher Scientific, LI-COR Biosciences, and VWR International.
