Building Computational Tools for the Health Sciences

The University of Calgary has created a one-of-a-kind undergraduate Bioinformatics program that includes a complement of high caliber academic resources and facilities, such as

  • the O'Brien Centre for the Bachelor of Health Sciences with its state-of-the-art bioinformatics classroom (BHSc 1501),
  • the Faculty of Medicine’s Sun Center of Excellence for Visual Genomics, and
  • the Information and Communications Technology  (ICT) building, which houses the Department of Computer Science, where various research groups work on projects related to bioinformatics, bio-systems informatics, computational biology, synthetic biology and systems biology.

If you are interested in how the human body works from an information systems perspective, then our BioInformatics stream is the program for you

If you are interested in what information on biological systems is accessible on the internet and how these online databases are created, maintained and used, then our BioInformatics stream is the program for you.

If you are interested in how the human genome project and gene sequencing changed the way we look at biological systems, then our BioInformatics stream is the program for you

If you are interested in how biological systems can be modeled and captured in compuer-based simulations, then our BioInformatics stream is the program for you.

If you are interested in how modern data visualization techniques provide unprecedented insights into biological systems, then our BioInformatics stream is the program for you.

This list offers only a glimpse of the potentials and opportunities that research in bioinformatics offers. The future of the life and health sciences relies largely on the proper utilization of computers for model building, data analysis and visualization. In our bioinformatics program you will learn the skills to actively participate in these endeavors.

As a bioinformatician you will shape the future of biology, medicine and the health sciences.
