University of Calgary

Research Program

Our research program offers many benefits to patients who volunteer to participate. The University of Calgary is one of the leading centres for research in Canada. Patients receive exceptional respiratory care and quality education from ourteam of Research Coordinators and Respiratory Physicians.

Study medication is provided at no cost and parking is free. Patients involved in our studies whose respiratory condition worsens can be seen by a Respiratory Specialist within one or two days, compared to waiting the usual three to four months.

In our clinical trials we work with novel, emerging respiratory medications that are approved by Health Canada. At the University of Calgary's brand new Teaching, Research and Wellness centre (next to Foothills Hospital) we have state of the art facilities including a bronchoscopy suite and an advanced pulmonary function lab to conduct breathing tests, exercise testing, etc. Our Research Coordinators are available to answer your questions at anytime and will work around your schedule in order to book appointments. We help you to achieve better disease control through education and treatment so that you can have a better quality of life.

Our program is involved...

in clinical trials of new and existing treatments for respiratory disease including:

  • Asthma
  • COPD
  • Emphysema
  • Chronic Bronchitis
  • Bronchiectasis
  • Tuberculosis
  • Sinusitis
  • Flu
  • Pneumonia
  • Colds

We have also evaluated and published studies regarding:

  • the relationship between heartburn and asthma
  • asthma and pets in the home
  • evaluation of action plans in the management of asthma
  • effectiveness of the adult asthma clinic
  • the benefits of an outreach educational program to Southern Alberta
  • impact of asthma nurse education

What do participants say...

about their experience in our studies?  Here are some comments from previous study participants:

  • "I learned so much about my asthma and am much more confident of being in control now"
  • "The staff took the time to explain everything in detail and were very helpful with teaching me proper techniques and practices"

Elaine has been participating in studies since 2001.  Click here to read about her experience.
