What is a chronic cough?

A chronic cough is a cough which lasts more than 4 weeks and is surprisingly one of the most common reasons people visit their family doctor.  This type of cough can affect your sleep, cause urinary incontinence (uncontrolled passing of urine), chest pain, or dizziness, and interfere with things you do every day, like talking on the phone.

What causes it?

Most causes are non-life threatening conditions such as post-nasal drip, mild asthma, bronchitis, smoking or smoker's cough,  mild COPD, viral infections like the flu or a cold, gastroesophageal reflux or a combination of these.  Very rarely is a chronic cough related to more serious conditions such as lung cancer or tuberculosis.

How can CCAP help?

The Chronic Cough Program is led by Dr. Stephen Field (respirologist) and patients are seen at the Foothills Medical Centre (FMC).  At this Program, we:

  • accept referrals from family physicians and specialists
  • provide education by one of our certified respiratory educators
  • help manage and bring chronic cough under control
  • provide consistent follow up
