Herschel Island

Herschel, (known as 'Qikiqtaruk' to the Inuit) is a small island located just off the north coast of the Yukon Territory. It had long been an Inuit community, with archaeological evidence indicating the presence of prehistoric native cultures. It had also been a meeting place for Arctic whalers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The settlement was largely run by the whalers, a rambunctious lot, until the NWMP settled there in 1904 and began to establish law and order. It was also from Herschel that the North West Mounted Police carried out many of their legendary dogsled patrols, which took them hundred of miles across the Arctic wilderness.
