BANKING FACILITIES The Cheque One familiar banking device was the cheque. While the idea of using written promissory notes to transfer money may have originated in Roman Palestine, the modern practice evolved in Byzantium, eventually spreading to the Islamic world. By the late Middle Ages, Italian merchants and their counterparts in other European countries were using cheques as well. The term itself comes from the Arabic word sakk. |
