Geophysics Professor Involved with a Mission for Mars
Devon Island in Nunavut is a cold, desert-like, cratered landscape, much like the surface of Mars. And this is where U of C geophysics professor Rob Stewart is working with NASA’s Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence Institute (SETI) on the NASA Haughton-Marks Project. Stewart -- who turned down the opportunity to be a Canadian astronaut so he could return to his research and teaching -- is testing out equipment that may be used to carry out field surveys on Mars. Did you know?
The media has a bad habit when it comes to portraying nuns. While many sisters are working in the community helping teenage mothers, running AIDS clinics, or offering a variety of other services, they are often depicted as ruler-wielding Mother Superior types or even “boxing” or “flying” nuns in movies and on television says U of C communications professor Rebecca Sullivan. To find out more about what the foremost expert in the world on media portrayals of nuns has to say, go to http://www.ucalgary.ca/news/oct03/nuns-media.html
