Groundbreaking Course for Computer Science
The University of Calgary's Department of Computer Science will become the first institution in Canada to offer a course in computer viruses and malware as part of its undergraduate program in fall 2003. Along with covering legal, ethical, and computer security issues, the course will focus on developing software such as computer viruses, worms, and Trojan horses that are known to wreak havoc to the tune of billions of dollars world-wide on an annual basis. The course will prepare students for careers dealing with computer security and helping industry develop more secure software.

Charting New Ice Waters
Seven delegates from the United States Arctic Research Commission (USAC), all appointed by the American president, visited U of C in May to meet with university researchers. Alberta is viewed as the "jumping off point" for Arctic research endeavours, and the group is examining ways for closer research ties and future collaborations. Calgary was the only city the American commissioners visited officially while in Canada.

It's Poetry in Retirement
In mid-May, writers, poets, and admirers, gathered at a conference to honour retiring English professor and Governor General Award-winning poet, Fred Wah. Fellow Governor General Award-winners Robert Kroetsch, George Bowering, Roy Miki, among others took part in readings and other events that commemorated Wah's long and distinguished career at U of C and his strong ties to Calgary's literary community. Wah will retire in June.

U of C Reaches a Milestone at June Convocation
June convocation ceremonies will be underway in a couple of weeks, and it will be during that five-day stretch that the 100,000th person graduates from U of C. To celebrate this milestone, Arch: The University of Calgary Alumni Magazine will be handed out prior to each ceremony, and this summer issue will be mailed a month ahead of schedule.

The cover story offers a glimpse of 100 alumni who are making interesting and remarkable achievements, another feature story profiles a handful of "seasoned" 2003 grads, and the magazine tracked down the story of U of C's first graduate and all of those who were the first to convocate in each decade since.

Did you know?

You now have the perfect excuse for why that assignment is late or the fact that you haven't quite gotten around to fixing the screen door. According to Piers Steel, a professor with the Haskayne School of Business, humans are wired for procrastination. Steel says, "Procrastination is an over-valuation of the short term over the long term. It's probably just an evolutionary holdover from a time when a bird in the hand was worth more than two in the bush." To read more about Steel's research, go to http://www.ucalgary.ca/news/may03/procrastination.html.
