Not Just One, But Two—Two Generous Gifts to U of C
March saw the donation of two separate gifts to U of C, enabling the Faculty of Medicine to care for and educate more of the community. The Libin Cardiovascular Institute of Alberta was created with a $15-million gift from the Alvin and Mona Libin Foundation. One goal of the institute will be to improve overall care, programs, and treatments for patients with cardiovascular disease.
The Faculty of Medicine will also benefit from a generous $5-million donation from David and Gail O’Brien to help launch a world-class undergraduate educational centre and program. The O’Brien Centre for the Bachelor of Health Sciences Program will offer majors in health and society, biomedical science, and bioinformatics.
A Canadian-first at U of C
For the first time in Canada, a new combined technique was used to treat an inoperable brain aneurysm, and it was conducted by two doctors affiliated with the U of C’s Faculty of Medicine. Rather than performing invasive brain surgery, John Wong and Mark Hudon perfomed an intracranial stent placement and aneurysm treatment using Onyx—a unique liquid embolic agent—on a patient, working through only a small incision in the leg.
