U of C News
Mayan Research Sparks International Interest
On January 17, a U of C professor made "history" in England. Archaeologist Kathryn Reese-Taylor is leading a team to the heart of the Guatemalan jungle to study the ancient Mayan city of Naachtun. When Reese-Taylor made a preliminary trip to the site in July 2002, a BBC television crew made the trek with her-filming it for a BBC/History Channel production called "Lost Cities of the Maya." Excavation of the site has not yet begun, but interest in the international project has already been sparked. The program will air in Canada and the U.S. at a later date.

Haskayne School Ranks in the Top 100 Again
The Haskayne School of Business was again ranked by the Financial Times of London as one of the top 100 MBA programs in the world, placing the school among the best business schools in the world. The Haskayne School of Business ranked particularly high in career progress (13th worldwide and second in Canada), which measures the
degree to which alumni have moved up the career ladder after graduating.

The President Is On the Move
Leading by example, the university president and vice-presidents are shifting spaces to work more closely together-literally. The Office of the President has moved in with the vice-presidents at the north end of the Administration Building. "As with many areas across campus, we have had a tendency to work in silos. The budget restructuring currently under way is not just about finding ways to reduce costs, it's about finding ways to use our resources more effectively," says President Weingarten. He adds that, "Every area across campus was asked to take a good, hard look at their operations, and we are no exception. It's our responsibility to lead by example."

Haskayne School Dean Accepts New Posting
David Saunders, dean of the Haskayne School of Business, has accepted a position as dean of the School of Business at Queen's University, it was announced on December 20th. Under Saunder's leadership the school was renamed the Haskayne School of Business, and it was ranked for the first time among the top 100 business schools worldwide. Saunders will assume his new responsibilities July 1, 2003.

Alumni News

New Alumni Award to Be Granted

The nomination deadline for both awards is February 28. If you know of an alum with a longstanding and distinguished career or a younger graduate who is already burning brightly, be sure to nominate him or her.
