New Children's Hospital Plans Unveiled
Colourful plans were unveiled recently for the new Alberta Children's Hospital to be built on the West Campus. Designs for the four-story building in a park-like setting were shaped with input from children and parents. Creating a warm environment was key to creating a plan that incorporated lots of colour, large windows, enough space in patient rooms to allow for an extra bed for a parent, and a series of gardens outside. To find out more about the plans, visit www.lookingforward.ucalgary.ca.

University Units Asked to Reduce Spending
Much has been made of President Harvey Weingarten's plan to eliminate the university's deficit lately, and he addressed just how he plans to do it in his State of the University address on February 14. Academic units (faculties and the library) are being asked to reduce spending by four percent this year and three percent next year (2004/05). Central service administrative units are being asked to reduce even more-10 percent this year and five percent next year. Revenue generation is also key to balancing the budget, and the plan requires the university to generate an additional $9 million in revenue over two years. For more details on Weingarten's address, go to http://www.ucalgary.ca/unicomm/future/index.html

Pre-eminent Columnist and Essayist a Big Draw at Mac Hall
Lewis Lapham, editor of Harper's magazine and author of the new book, Theater of War, packed the new Mac Hall on February 19. More than 1,000 people showed up to hear the latest speaker in the Palmer lecture series. Speaking on Canada, globalism, and the war on terror, Lapham didn't hold back in his critical examination of the U.S. war on terrorism and what it means to Canada and the rest of the world.
Since its inception in 1995, the Palmer Lectures have provided Calgarians with an opportunity to personally hear the thought and ideas of a broad range of influential global thinkers.

Next Issue of Arch Will Be in Your Hands Soon
Watch your mailboxes in a couple of weeks for the spring issue of Arch: The University of Calgary Alumni Magazine. If you're thinking of making a career change, be sure to take a look at the cover story-it highlights the top five industries to find a job in right now, along with how the U of C is preparing students to work in those industries. For another story, Arch talked to a handful of U of C-trained physicians to investigate why they and other Canadian doctors move to the United States to live and work. There's also a reader survey to determine if Arch is providing the kind of content U of C alumni want to read. The survey can be completed online as well, go to www.ucalgary.ca/alumni in early March to fill it out-we want to hear from you!

Restructuring in the Alumni Relations Office
Reorganization according to the university's academic and strategic plans was implemented in the university's external relations department last week. Five positions across the office were eliminated or consolidated, including two in alumni relations. One research position was eliminated, and the directorship of alumni relations will be reconfigured in the coming months to include community relations as well. The pairing of the two areas will combine their forces, enabling the U of C to make stronger connections with the Calgary community and alumni living in the city and elsewhere.
