New Programs Get Funding Boost
The U of C had already planned to launch two new programs this fall in response to health care and health science priorities across the country, but the programs will get a stronger introduction with a $3.7 million funding increase. The two programs are the Bachelor of Health Sciences program and the Biomedical Engineering program. Business Professor Receives Award
Peter Sherer of the Haskayne School of Business has recently received one of the highest honours in management study — the 2002 Best Article Award from the Academy of Management. His article was one of the 450 articles received by the Academy of Management Journal (AMJ) each year. Only 40 articles are published, and only one receives the best paper award.
Sherer’s article, “Institutional Change in Large Law Firms,” examines how competitive pressures, particularly labour market scarcities, drive large law firms to adopt innovative human resource management practices. To read more, go to http://www.ucalgary.ca/news/august03/sherer.html
Mexican Education Delegates Visit U of C
In mid-August, the U of C hosted a prominent delegation that included the Secretary of Education of Alberta's “Sister State” in Mexico. Secretary of Education Guillermo Martinez Mora and his colleagues from the Jalisco state government met with U of C officials and students to celebrate and discuss past, current, and future initiatives — such as collaborative research, student exchange programs, and travel-study courses. The visit was intended to strengthen the U of C's educational partnership with Jalisco, an important export market located in the west-central region of Mexico. The U of C already has a Latin American Research Centre and offers a bachelor's degree program in Latin American Studies.
