Children's Hospital Groundbreaking Held on Campus
Premier Ralph Klein, U of C President Dr. Harvey Weingarten, and other dignitaries were on hand September 20 to officially launch the site preparation for the new Alberta Children's Hospital on the U of C's West Campus. "The infrastructure work which has now started on the West Campus is an important first step in the eventual ground-breaking and construction of the new Children's Hospital," said Klein.
The province has committed $170 million for the 160-bed facility. This fall, 60 acres of the West Campus will remain available for public access, while the remaining 120 acres will be fenced as a construction site.
New U of C Chancellor to be Installed Today
Bill Warren will become the 10th chancellor, or ceremonial head, of the University of Calgary on September 26. Warren, a Calgary lawyer with a long history of volunteer involvement, recently retired as president of the Canadian Olympic Association, having served with them in a variety of roles since 1989. He has served three years as a member of the U of C Senate. Mr. Warren's term as chancellor is four years.
First Doctorate Awarded in Workplace Learning
U of C PhD student Gordon Graham will earn the institution's first doctoral degree in adult and workplace learning this fall from the Faculty of Continuing Education. "Some researchers estimate that as much as 90 cents out of every dollar invested in training is lost because of inadequate understanding of the transfer of learning phenomenon," says Graham, who studied the transfer of learning phenomenon for both his master's and his PhD degrees in the Faculty of Continuing Education.

Alumni Trivia
Our trivia question in last month's Arch-E was: What is the name of the three-day orientation event on campus for new students?
Several people responded with the correct answer of U of C 101. Congratulations to Audrey Lawrence, MA'80, who was chosen randomly from all of the correct responses. Audrey will receive a University of Calgary T-shirt for answering the question.
This month's question is: A U of C professor has written a book that analyzes one of television's most popular series. What television show is it?
