U of C Senate Elects New Chancellor
William (Bill) Warren, a Calgary lawyer who recently retired as the president of the Canadian Olympic Association, was elected the 10th Chancellor of University of Calgary. Elected by the U of C Senate March 22, Warren will begin his term as Chancellor after the June convocation ceremonies this year. Serving for one four-year term, the chancellor confers the degrees of the University at convocation and is mandated by the Universities Act to represent the public interest.
Students Vote for Universal Transit Pass
University of Calgary students, in their annual elections last week, voted in favour of the U-Pass. This Calgary city transit pass, to be available to students in September, 2002, will cost $50 for the first semester and rise to $56 per term in 2003. Nearly 2,000 students voted against implementing the mandatory bus pass while 2,800 voted in favor of it. Each students will be required to purchase the pass whether they use it or not.
Medical Researchers Receive $19.5 million in Funding
The Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research (AHFMR) announced March 18 $19.5 million in funding to 24 U of C medical and health researchers. Cancer and joint injury are two main areas of research that the funding will be used for. “The University of Calgary has benefitted tremendously from AHFMR support which has helped us attract and retain leading health researchers,” says University of Calgary President Dr. Harvey Weingarten. “This remarkable partnership has helped build the U of C’s reputation as one of Canada’s top universities.” Throughout the province, AHFMR awards for 2002 are expected to total $45 million.

Alumni Volunteers Serve Lunch to the Needy
Nearly a dozen U of C alumni volunteers served lunch to 500 hungry Calgarians at the Mustard Seed Street Ministry in downtown Calgary February 24. Organized by University of Calgary Alumni Association Vice President Jessica Gomes, the volunteer team plans to assist other homeless organizations with their activities later this year. Take Charge of your Career
The U of C's Counselling and Student Development Centre and the Alumni Association have partnered to offer alumni assistance with career planning, career transition, or making decisions about whether or not to return to post-secondary studies. Both individual career counselling and career planning workshops are available, focusing on the value and marketability of your UofC Degree. These fee-based services are offered by a Chartered Psychologist and alumni may be eligible for coverage under Employee Assistance Programs. Arch Wins Design Award
Arch, The University of Calgary Alumni Magazine, under the editorship of Leslie Strudwick, was awarded a Bronze in the Category Overall Publication and Design Category of the Council of Advancement in Education District VIII Awards competition. Entries consisted of American and Canadian alumni magazines from the northwestern US and Western Canadian. Watch for the next issue of this award winning magazine in June, 2002.

MBA April Luncheon Features Selena Wright
The MBA Alumni Association invites you to attend its 2002 networking luncheon series held on the second Friday of every month. G8 Preparations Talk on Campus
A townhall meeting will be held March 28 at 12:30 p.m. on G8: Conflict Resolution and the De-escalation of Violence. This presentation, by the RCMP and Calgary City Police, will highlight how police are preparing for the G8. The meeting will take place in the MacEwan Foyer (main floor link between MSC and Science B.
U of C Dancers Present Mainstage 2002
Mainstage 2002, presented by the Faculty of Fine Arts and Kinesiology, will be held March 21, 22 and 23 in the University Theatre, Craigie Hall at 8 pm. Mainstage 2002 will celebrate the accomplishments of 75 dance majors and talented choreographers who have created work for them. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for students and seniors.
