Donation to Library Makes U of C a World Centre for Science Fiction Research
The library at U of C now has one of the strongest resources anywhere for the study of science fiction--it received a gift of 30,000-40,000 science fiction books and magazines from the family of William Robert (Bob) Gibson. During his 92 years, Gibson amassed a collection that filled the family attic, garage, and a storage shed. Shortly after his death, his son Andrew, BSc’88, MSc’93, approached the university about donating the collection. The library now hopes to raise $50,000 to prepare and maintain the significant collection.

U of C-led Archaeology Team Heads to Cameroon
A University of Calgary archaeologist is leading the first expedition to excavate the so-called Strongholds of Cameroon, which are some of the most remarkable stone-built structures anywhere in Africa. Beginning their four-month project this September, Dr. Nicholas David will lead a team consisting of other archaeologists, a U of C grad student, a German ethnologist, Cameroonian students, and a conservation architect from Rome. Although the structures are likely over 300 years old, the strongholds have never before been the subjects of scholarly inquiry.

Alumni Trivia
The Alumni Association is one of the sponsors of a three-day orientation event on campus for first-year students, which has been a model for other Canadian universities when planning their own orientations. What is the event called at U of C?

July’s trivia question asked who appeared on the cover of the summer 2002 issue of Arch; the answer is professor of biochemistry and molecular biology and leading researcher in bioinformatics, Dr. Christoph Sensen.

Thank you to all of those who responded. Jason Laurendeau, BKin’97, MA’00, was chosen from among those with the correct answer to win the U of C T-shirt. This month’s winner will also receive a T-shirt.

Thank you for reading Arch-E.
