Alumna organizes conference on sustainability

Sylvia Polay Griffith, BA’86, MEd’89, has been a councillor in the Calgary area for many years and she’s also involved in Spiritual Directions, a not-for-profit agency founded in 1999 by her husband, John Griffith.

In this capacity, she became involved in promoting sustainable practices and is now on the planning team for a conference in Calgary this November, Leading the Way.

Leading the Way: Building a Sustainable Future, features Dr. Peter Senge and Dr. Margaret Wheatley, two internationally renowned experts in economic, environmental and social sustainability.

“We want to help business and political organizations redefine their purpose, and function better in the community,” Sylvia says. “Most businesses believe their purpose is providing a product. From a spiritual perspective, their purpose is to enhance the community by providing employment where people can offer their talents, and by producing products and services that improve the world and make it a better place for all to live. ”

Leading the Way will bring together leaders from many sectors to explore collaborative, interdependent and global-centric ways of thinking about critical issues. Sylvia hopes this conference will mark the beginning of more future collaboration between community, business and political leaders.
