Almost seventy per cent of our graduates live and work in Calgary and our alumni can be found in 146 countries around the world. So when the Overseas Association for College Admissions Counsellors hosts their international conference on campus, who better to showcase the university and city than our alumni.
To do this, four alumni participated in a video and were asked to describe Calgary–what makes it unique–and the University of Calgary–why this is the place you want to learn. These alumni studied in different faculties and took different career paths - four-time Olympic medalist and humanitarian, Kristina Groves, BSc’04; CEO of Mozilla Corporation, Gary Kovacs, BComm’90, MBA’99; former vice-president at Enbridge, Bonnie Dupont, MEd’90; Canadian astronaut Dr. Robert Thirsk, BSc’76, LLD’09; and NASA flight controller Laura Lucier, BSc’99.
Dr. Robert Thirsk described Calgarians as having a “can-do attitude.” “If an idea is worth pursuing, Calgarians will find a way to make it happen,” he says. Speedskating Olympic medalist Kristina Groves has spent the past sixteen years in Calgary and has watched the city change to become more diverse, energized and youthful – changes that she’s really excited about. “There’s a young population with a lot of new ideas and new passions that are going to make this city one of the best in the world.”
