Alumni raise funds for quake victims

Eric Sit, BSc'90, and six other U of C alumni (Brian Cheung, Falice Chin, Jay Cai, Ken Cheung, Michelle Chan and Grace Sit) organized a fundraising concert that took place June 24 at the University Theatre and raised more than $80,000 for relief efforts by the Canadian Red Cross for earthquake victims in China.

The group started organizing the show, called "We Are the World", only three weeks before the curtains were raised and attracted, among others the Consul General of the People's Republic of China, Calgary, who was visibly touched by the work of this group of young Canadians helping the relief efforts in China. MLA and Deputy House Speaker Wayne Cao also brought greetings from the Government of Alberta.

The evening included a powerful performance by Wesley Chu, a world renowned piano prodigy and a ballroom dance demonstration by teens Mateusz Bawal and Maria Markovina. The two youngest performers, Justine Snaychuk and Mathew Michalski, six- and eight-years-old respectively, brought a hush in the theatre when they gave a captivating demonstration of Cha-cha.  The most touching part of the evening was the finale when all the performers came out to sing "We are the world."
