Student Events Sponsored by the Alumni Association

Here are a few student club events which received funding from the Alumni Association. Club funding is provided by the University of Calgary Alumni Association with the hope of enhancing the student experience and campus life. This is possible thanks to many generous donors.

in partnership with University of Calgary Society of Young Researchers: Interdisciplinary Research Forum

January 2012

This day long conference exposed undergraduate science students to a wide variety of research opportunities at the University of Calgary. A special focus was put on encouraging communication and collaboration across different fields of science. Next year this group hopes to expand this conference to include both graduate and undergraduate students from other faculties.

Society of Undergraduates in Economies: Industry Night

50 economic undergraduates along with students from geophysics, bioscience, engineering and business attended the S.U.E. Industry Night. At this event a panel of four professionals, including alumna Amanda Gallacher, spoke about their career paths and chosen industries. Following the panel students and professionals had the opportunity to network.

This annual event gives first-year and returning students a chance to connect and participate in team building activities. In the first round all students are mixed together, in the second round, first-year students are thrown together to compete against “the old guard”. Sponsorship from the Alumni Association helped make this event affordable to allow more students to participate.

UC Idol 2011

This annual event allowed six university students to showcase their talents and included a variety of special performances. UC Idol's purpose is to showcase student talent, involve the community, raise school spirit, and support charities. This year's charity was the Canadian Cancer Society. Support from the Alumni Association allowed them to take their show to the next level by making significant improvements to their lighting and sound systems.

Kinesiology Students Association: Kin Camp 2011

From Sept. 24 -25, 50 Kinesiology Students ventured north of Calgary for a weekend long retreat led by senior kinesiology students.  Event organizer Hailey Ward said, “The funding allowed us to lower the cost of the trip for students and book the big lodge for students to stay in which was great. Having everyone close to each other like that further encouraged bonding and interaction between students.” Organizers are hoping to be able to make this an annual event and allow for a bigger turnout next year.

Development Studies Club members participated in their first AIDS Walk for Life in the fall. The team beat their fundraising goal by $2,000 dollars. Sporting their bright yellow t-shirts on a beautiful sunny day, the activity helped the club bond at the beginning of the semester.
