The Alberta Initiative for School Improvement (AISI) was introduced to the province in 2000 and has been sustained in four 'three year cycles.' It is described as a bold approach to improving the opportunities for students and it is expected that teachers, administrators, parents and the larger community would work together in providing optimum and hopefully innovative ways of engaging students and supporting their success. AISI is presently concluding its second year of the fourth cycle. The emphasis in this cycle has been to engage students more fully in their own learning and school success and to encourage parents, administrators and the larger community to help in optimizing the school experience for students. AISI is now recognized internationally and has been identified as a truly innovative approach to school improvement.
