University of Calgary

Veterinary Medicine

In the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) program, we are a progressive Faculty looking for students, perhaps like yourself, with a passion for the veterinary profession. You will cover the full range of the veterinary profession, from specialized production animal health and general rural veterinary practice to public health and research careers.

What will I study?

As a veterinary student, you will receive a general veterinary education covering food animals, equine, companion animals and other important species. You will be able to enrich this foundation through enhanced programs in production animal health, ecosystem and public health, equine health and investigative medicine.

UCVM offers an exciting program that integrates clinical and hands-on learning with basic knowledge throughout the curriculum. The curriculum will be delivered over four calendar years and include 9 semesters of instruction.

You will engage in off-campus learning activities in all semesters, with the majority of the final year spent learning with veterinarians across Alberta in our Distributed Veterinary Learning Community (DVLC).

How do I get in?

To gain admission, you will need to demonstrate academic competency, reasoning and problem solving skills. An understanding and appreciation of the veterinary profession and related animal populations and industries relevant to their career interests is expected. No specific animal related experience is required.
