Student with Books, UndecidedAre you confused about your career choice? Unsure of your strengths? You’re not alone. Did you know that approximately 60% of undergraduate students change their major at least once during their academic career? Or maybe you're having difficulties deciding whether you should turn to a technical institute, small college, university or the military for more education.

There are a number of steps you can take to determine the career path and program that are best for you. In addition to contacting career-planning services, employees in fields that interest you, and organizations offering interest-inventory testing, you might want to check out the Alberta Learning Information Service Web site.

It is important to keep in mind that career planning is a time-consuming process with no quick detours. It involves collecting information and thoughtful reflection prior to making any meaningful decisions. Give yourself the time you need to arrive at an informed decision that is best for you.

The University of Calgary has 16 faculties and more than 80 programs. The first year of most programs is general, which will allow you to explore interests in a wide variety of disciplines. Consider taking some options during your first year in order to explore your interests. You never know whether or not a class you had originally decided to take as an option will lead you to your academic passion.

The University also has a number of services available to you if you're seeking guidance on what to take. The Counselling Centre offers a workshop on choosing a major. You can also speak to your guidance counselor if you're still in high school.

Remember that you are not alone when it comes to this decision, and there are plenty of resources that you can turn to.
