In the Faculty of Social Sciences, you will explore the nature and influence of human behaviour. The programs provide you the best of a broad liberal education with specialized training in one field of study. Many of our programs (Archaeology, Anthropology and Geography, to name a few) offer field schools where you may gain hands-on experience in locations as diverse as Belize, Africa, or regions of Alberta. You will learn to think critically, analyze problems, communicate effectively, gather and organize information, and interpret and assess situations. In a world where people typically have several careers during their lives, this type of education is invaluable preparation for success.
The Faculty of Social Sciences offers programs of study leading to either the Bachelor of Arts (BA) or the Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree. The major fields of specialization are:
* In collaboration with the Schulich School of Engineering, the Haskayne School of Business, and the Van Horne Institute, the Faculty of Social Sciences offers a four year BA/BSC program in Transportation Studies.
† The four year BA degree programs in Ancient and Medieval History, History and Philosophy of Science, and Linguistics and Lanuage are offered in cooperation with the Faculty of Humanities.
** The four year BSc degree programs in Earth Science and in Environmental Science are offered in collaboration with the Faculty of Science.
†† The four year BA degree programs in East Asian and Latin American Studies are offered in collaboration with the Faculties of Communication and Culture and Humanities.
In conjunction with the Faculties of Education, Engineering, Haskayne School of Business, Humanities and Science, the Faculty of Social Sciences also offers five year combined degree programs which lead to the BA, BSc, BCR or BComm degree as well as the Faculty of Social Sciences' BA or BSc degree. Applicants may also choose to complete a five year combined degree program within the Faculty of Social Sciences and receive two degrees.
Admission RequirementsTo be considered for admission to the Faculty of Social Sciences, applicants are required to present appropriate high school subjects and a competitive average.
Holders of an approved degree may apply to enter an undergraduate degree program offered by the Faculty of Social Sciences provided that the second bachelor's degree is not in the same field as the first. Students should contact the Undergraduate Program Office at (403) 220-5881 for more details.
