Kinesiology

Kinesiology is the study of human movement with the goal of better health and quality of life. Well-established as an international leader in health, wellness, and human performance, the Faculty of Kinesiology offers you a unique, integrated, and collaborative experience. In an experiential, inquiry-based setting, you will pursue the goal of health by linking many disciplines. You may earn one of two degrees: Bachelor of Kinesiology or Bachelor of Science. Combined degrees with the faculties of Education, Nursing, and Haskayne School of Business are also available.

The Faculty of Kinesiology offers four year programs leading to the Bachelor of Kinesiology (BKin) or the Bachelor of Science (BSc). The major fields of specialization are as follows:

The Mind Sciences specialization is offered in cooperation with the Department of Psychology, Faculty of Social Sciences. The Faculty of Kinesiology offers five-year combined programs in conjunction with the Faculty of Education (BKin Pedagogy/BEd), the Haskayne School of Business (BComm/BKin General), and the Faculty of Nursing (BKin General/BN).

Admission Requirements

To be considered for admission to the Faculty of Kinesiology, applicants are required to present the appropriate high school subjects and a competitive average.

Athletic Therapy

For the Athletic Therapy major, applicants must compete for one of ten positions. To be eligible for this major, applicants must:

  1. Present eight or more full-course equivalents. The last four full-course equivalents must have been completed at the University of Calgary.
  2. Obtain a minimum admission GPA* of 3.00.
  3. Present the following required courses, or equivalents: Kinesiology 261 (minimum grade of "C+"), Zoology 361 and 363 (minimum grades of "C-"), Kinesiology 203, 263, 371 (minimum grade of B), and Knes 330.
  4. Completion of a structured Letter of Intent (to be used in event of a tie).

After meeting the above criteria, students will be ranked according to grade point average.

Pedagogy

For the Pedagogy Major, applicants compete for one of 30 positions at the second year level. First year students will normally enter the General Major in the Faculty of Kinesiology in order to complete requirements. Applicants from outside Kinesiology must meet the Faculty admission criteria as well as Pedagogy-specific requirements. To be eligible for this major, applicants must:

  1. Present four or more full-course equivalents, with an Admission GPA* of at least 2.70.
  2. Successfully complete Kinesiology 211 and 213 with a combined minimum grade point average of 2.85.

Completion of Kinesiology 201 is highly recommended (it is a prerequisite for Physical Education 321).

*The Admission GPA is the average calculated over the most recent coursework to a maximum of five full-course equivalents (University of Calgary courses and/or transferable courses taken at other institutions). All grades within a session will be included except where the number of courses taken within a session exceeds that required to fulfill (to a maximum of) five full-course equivalents, in which case the highest grades will be used. Transfer courses are courses which are considered transferable to the University of Calgary regardless of grades obtained (including "D" and "F" grades).
