International Qualifications

Applicants who will be considered on the basis of high school credentials must present satisfactory standing on five distinct and appropriate subjects in the 12th (or 13th if appropriate) year of Senior Secondary School and must have graduated with the appropriate international credential.

English Language is required for admission to all undergraduate programs. English as a Second Language is not acceptable in lieu of English Language.

For admission purposes, the University of Calgary classifies all other subjects into the following four groups:

Group A:
Chinese, French, Geography, German, Greek, History, Italian, Latin, Russian, Spanish and languages other than English
Group B:
Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Mathematics, Calculus, Physics
Group C:
Art, Drama and Music
Group D:
Other subjects such as Accounting, Business Studies, Computer Science, Economics, Statistics, Physical Education

Specific subject requirements are outlined below:

Arts (except majors in Fine Arts):

  • English Language
  • subject from Group B, or a language other than English
  • two subjects from Group A or B
  • subject from Group A, B, C or D
Mathematics is required as a prerquisite for courses in the following programs: Archaeology, Economics, Geography, and Psychology.

Arts (Fine Arts majors in Dance, Drama, Music, or Visual Studies):

  • English Language
  • two subjects from Group A or B
  • one subject from Group A, B or C
  • one subject from Group A, B, C or D

Auditions are required for applicants to the Dance and Music (BMUS) programs. A portfolio is required for applicants to the Visual Studies program.

Education

  • Refer to requirements of Faculty offering teaching subject.

Haskayne School of Business:

  • English Language
  • Mathematics
  • two subjects from Group A or B
  • subject from Group A, B, C or D

Kinesiology:

  • English Language
  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Mathematics
  • subject from Group A, B, C or D
Medicine - Bachelor of Community Rehabilitation:
  • English Language
  • Biology
  • two subjects from Group A or B
  • one subject from Group A, B, C or D
Medicine - Bachelor of Health Sciences *:
  • English Language
  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Mathematics
  • subject from Group A, B, C or D

*A supplemental application is required by all applicants.

Nursing:

  • English Language
  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Mathematics
  • subject from Group A, B, C or D

Schulich School of Engineering:

  • English Language
  • Mathematics
  • Calculus
  • Chemistry
  • Physics

Applicants to the Schulich School of Engineering with a high academic average who present an acceptable Group A or B subject in lieu of Calculus may be considered for admission on an individual basis. Students who are admitted without Calculus will be asked to follow an alternate Mathematics program in their first year to overcome this deficiency.

Science:

  • English Language
  • Mathematics
  • two of Biology, Calculus, Chemistry or Physics
  • subject from Group A, B, C or D

Chemistry is required for all Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Geology & Geophysics and Physics & Astronomy programs. Biology is required for all Biological Sciences programs. Physics is recommended for all Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Geology & Geophysics, Physics & Astronomy, and Applied Mathematics programs. Calculus is strongly recommended for all programs.
