Humanities

The humanities are a cornerstone of higher education. In the Faculty of Humanities, you will learn to read, think, and write clearly and critically, developing an understanding of our intellectual traditions and their relevance to today's issues. You will gain an appreciation of the diversity and importance of the world's languages, literatures, philosophies and religions. You may specialize in one of six departments, or major in General Humanities, You may also choose an interdisciplinary major such as East Asian Studies or Religious Studies and Applied Ethics, or a combined degree with Engineering, Fine Arts, Haskayne School of Business, Science or Social Sciences.

The Faculty of Humanities offers programs of study leading to the Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in the following major fields:

† The BA degree programs in Ancient and Medieval History, History and Philosophy of Science, and Linguistics and Language are offered in cooperation with the Faculty of Social Sciences.

* The BA degree programs in East Asian Studies and Latin American Studies are offered in collaboration with the Faculties of Communication and Culture and Social Sciences.

In addition, the Faculty of Humanities offers five year combined degree programs in conjunction with the Faculties of Education, Fine Arts, Haskayne School of Business, Schulich School of Engineering, Science and Social Sciences. Graduates of the five year combined degree programs will receive both a BA degree and a BComm, BA, BEd, BFA or BSc degree. Applicants may also choose to complete a five year combined degree program within the Faculty of Humanities and receive two BA degrees.

Admission Requirements

To be considered for admission to the Faculty of Humanities, applicants are required to present the appropriate high school subjects and a competitive average.

Domestic Students

April 1, 2010 Deadline to apply for Business, Education, Engineering, Nursing, and Bachelor of Health Sciences for Fall 2010
May 1, 2010 Deadline to apply for all other programs
June 30, 2010 Deadline for transfer student transcripts
August 1, 2010 Deadline for high school student transcripts

International Students (outside Canada or USA)

February 1, 2010 Recommended deadline to apply for admission for Fall 2010
April 1, 2010 Deadline for transcripts and, if required, other supporting documents, as well as to apply for Business, Education, Engineering, Nursing, or Bachelor of Health Sciences
May 1, 2010 Deadline to apply for all other programs for Fall 2010

After Degree Programs

Holders of an approved degree may apply to enter an undergraduate degree program offered by the Faculty of Humanities provided that the second bachelor's degree is not in the same field as the first. Students should contact the Undergraduate Programs Office at (403) 220-5881 for more details.
