Linguistics and Language

In the Linguistics and Language program, you will acquire explicit knowledge of structural properties of language and gain proficiency in a new language. This program balances two broad approaches. One emphasizes the psychological reality of language as one cognitive system; students learn the structural properties of language in general and of one language (Spanish, Chinese, Arabic, etc.) in particular. The other approach emphasizes the humanistic reality of language as a social and historical phenomenon; students learn the socio-cultural context and the historical heritage that are essential parts of what people are saying when they use a particular language.
