Biomedical Engineering Specialization

Please note that the Biomedical Engineering Specialization is not a degree program. Students may opt to participate in specialization programs on top of their degree (e.g. studying towards a degree in Mechanical Engineering, with a Biomedical Engineering Specialization added on).

The Biomedical Engineering Specialization (BMES) is an undergraduate program offered by the Schulich School of Engineering at the University of Calgary and educates and trains high-quality undergraduate students for research or industry-related careers in biomedical engineering (except Oil & Gas). The specialization is comparable to a major and can be completed in parallel with any regular BSc degree in engineering. This means that students will be trained in a traditional engineering discipline, while obtaining knowledge in biological and medical science.

In the first year, students will complete the same courses as all other first-year engineering students. At the end of their first year, students will apply to the biomedical engineering specialization when they apply to one of our six programs. Students will be admitted first to a program, and then to the specialization. Entrance into this program will be limited to 35 students each year, and will be based primarily on academic achievement.

Biomedical engineers work in industries such as healthcare, pharmaceuticals, sports medicine, medical imaging, medical instrumentation, and are involved in design, manufacture, and testing of medical products; as well as in government, academic, and research institutions.

Practicum Year

All BMES students are required to fulfill practicum requirements. This can be satisfied through one of three options:

  1. A regular Internship placement (between the third and fourth academic year) in a biomedical engineering position.
  2. Two summer placements (totaling at least eight months) in biomedical engineering positions.
  3. A regular Internship placement (between the third and fourth academic year) in a non-biomedical engineering position plus four months in a biomedical engineering position.

Experience must be obtained with a suitable bio-engineering company/research laboratory or university research laboratory. Placement must be approved in advance by Chair of the Biomedical Engineering Practicum Committee.
