English for Academic Purposes

The English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program is the only comprehensive, intensive program designed to prepare academically qualified students whose native language is not English, for entry into the University's degree or diploma programs.

The EAP program is for prospective international, Permanent Residents or Canadian students whose level of English language proficiency is at the intermediate to advanced level. The program is not designed for beginners.

The EAP program is offered throughout the year in Fall, Winter, Spring/Summer Sessions and has three tiers: Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3. All students are given a language assessment test upon commencement of the program and are then placed in the appropriate Tier.

Successful completion of Tier 3 satisfies the English Language Proficiency Requirement for admission into most programs at the University.

EAP+Degree

Academically qualified applicants who are not exempt from or have not satisfied the English Language Proficiency Requirement by other means, may apply to EAP in combination with a degree program ("EAP+Degree") for the Fall Semester.  If you are admitted to your choice of degree, you must then successfully complete the EAP program within 12 months in order to maintain your admission, and proceed on to degree credit courses.

Please note that the EAP+Degree is not an option for applicants to the Haskayne School of Business, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Nursing, Faculty of Medicine, or the Faculty of Social Work (applicants to these faculties must satisfy the English Language Proficiency requirement prior to admission, by the document deadline).

Applicants must formally present a minimum English proficiency test score by the appropriate document deadline to be eligible for EAP+Degree.  Acceptable proficiency tests and scores are:

EAP+Degree - Minimum Required Test Scores
70
193
523
50
5.5

EAP+Degree students must also qualify for minimum placement in Tier 1 courses following the EAP language assessment.  Admitted students whose placement test results indicate placement below EAP Tier 1 will have their admission to the degree rescinded and may choose to begin working on their goal to achieve ELP in the PREP Courses as Open Studies students.

Students admitted to the combined EAP+Degree and enrolled in Tier 3 can take one university credit course while registered in the program with the approval of the EAP Coordinator.  EAP courses may not be used for credit towards a degree or diploma program.

To apply for EAP+Degree, please complete the online Application for Undergraduate Admission form on the Recruitment and Admissions website.   On the application form, please select the EAP option.  Consult the Important Dates page for application deadlines.

EAP Only (Open Studies)

If you are interested in studying English language only, or if you are unable to provide the minimum proficiency test score required for EAP+Degree, you can register in EAP only through Open Studies.  You can start EAP Only (Open Studies) in the Fall, WInter, Spring or Summer semesters.
