Aboriginal Admission Policy

What is the Aboriginal Admission Policy?

The University of Calgary acknowledges and respects the rich diversity of our learners, their communities, cultures and traditions, and their aspirations and abilities. In order to ensure equitable access and successful participation of Aboriginal learners, the University of Calgary has instituted an Aboriginal Admissions Policy for qualified Aboriginal applicants seeking admissions to undergraduate programs. The policy will be in effect once a student self-identifies as an Aboriginal applicants on the undergraduate application form. Prior to registering for the first time, students admitted under this policy will be required to submit proof of Aboriginal ancestry.

The purpose of this policy is, to ensure the provision of a University learning environment that encourages full access, participation and success for Aboriginal students, and enriches all aspects of the intellectual and cultural life of the University of Calgary through full participation of Aboriginal students.

Who is eligible for this policy?

On the Application for Undergraduate Admission, all Canadian applicants are asked to indicate the following:

  • Status Indian/First Nations
  • Non-Status Indian/First Nations
  • Métis
  • Inuit

How are applicants considered?

Applicants will first be considered for admission under regular competitive criteria. If required, a second consideration under the Aboriginal Admission Policy will occur automatically.

If granted admission under the Policy, applicants must provide proof of their Aboriginal status by:

  • Supplying a photocopy of a Native, Inuit or Métis status card, or
  • Contacting The Native Centre to work out an alternative way of proving Aboriginal status.
