Career Development
The Centre’s capacity-building mandate is consistent with a life-long approach to learning. Centre members, in keeping with this mandate, benefit from an interdisciplinary approach to mentoring and other facets of career development.
Centre members teach in several educational programs, and learners may benefit from taking courses offered by multiple departments. (See ‘People” section for more information.)
The Department of Community Health Sciences in the Faculty of Medicine is the main hub for research training offered by Centre faculty.
- The Department of Community Health Sciences and the Institute for Public Health co-sponsor a weekly seminar series. These seminars are accredited for professional development purposes. Typically, they are available electronically in a webinar format. Centre faculty coordinate periodic seminars in this series under the Population Health and Equity theme. Trainees and research staff in the Centre may meet with Population Health and Equity speakers.
- The Department of Community Health Sciences offers a specialization in Population and Public Health, at both the MSc and PhD levels. At both of these levels, a research-based thesis is required. Centre faculty supported the curriculum design process, supervise students enrolled in this specialization, and offer pertinent courses. A Foundations of Population and Public Health seminar course is required for this specialization; when numbers permit, this course may be taken by learners enrolled in other postgraduate programs and by practitioners who are not enrolled in a degree program.
- The Department of Community Health Sciences supports the Bachelor of Health Sciences - Health & Society Honours Program, which equips undergraduate students with foundational knowledge and skills for careers in population health. Several Centre members participate in this degree program. Opportunities exist for 3rd-year and 4th-year Health & Society students to contribute to research at the Centre, as part of their coursework.
- The Department of Community Health Sciences sponsors a suite of workshops in Health Research Methods that are open to students enrolled in other programs, faculty members, and practitioners.
The Population Health Intervention Research Network sponsors several different capacity-building programs for which current and prospective trainees at the Centre may be eligible. These programs include an annual summer institute, scholarships, fellowships, webinars, and internships that may be undertaken locally, nationally or internationally.
