SEX WEEK Sexual and Gender Wellness Week, Feb. 6-10

Monday February 6 
Lunch and Learn:  STIs and You.  What are the STIs that are active in Calgary?  What are symptoms that you should be aware of?  How can STIs be treated?  How can you prevent transmission?  Join Dr. Hong for a discussion of STIs and you.  Monday, 12 – 1pm in Wellness Centre classroom. Workshop sponsored by the Undergraduate Nursing Students and the Wellness Centre.  Light lunch will be provided by the Undergraduate Nursing Students. Please pre-register at the Counseling Centre. Drop ins are welcome.

Head, Heart, and Body Decision Making. Wondering how people have  great personally satisfying sexual lives?   Wondering when it is right for you to be sexually active and when abstinence may be a better choice?  Come and discover an easy to use frame work. When you say YES! you will do so with total confidence that you are making the right sexual decision for you. . Monday, 3:00 – 4:30 in SU Council Chambers. Workshop sponsored by the Undergraduate Nursing Students and the Wellness Centre.

Tuesday February 7
Wise Guyz – Men and masculinity. What does it mean to be a man in today’s world?  What are the messages men receive about masculinity and how does this affect our sexuality?  This workshop will invite you to explore current issues in male sexual health, myths, and the role of pornography, consent and relationships.  Tuesday, 3:00 – 4:30 in SU Council Chambers.  Workshop sponsored by the WRC Male Allies, the Nursing Guys Club and the Wellness Centre.

Love Bytes: Stories About the Right to Love. These films grew out of a participatory action research study where advocates in the disability community share their perspectives, experiences and opinions about the right to love. These  educational films  reframe the discussion about love and sex from a place of pride, human rights, and celebration.  Discussion about the research process and findings will conclude with a wine/beer and cheese/snacks social. Tuesday, 5-7 pm in Wellness Centre classroom.  Sponsored by the by Graduate Student Association, the Wellness Centre, and the WHAT Speakership Series.

Wednesday February 8
Porn and Healthy Sexuality: Can they Co-Exist?  Does Porn have a place in one’s healthy sexuality? Who uses Pornography and why? Explore issues and your own values related to pornography use. Wednesday, 3:00 – 4:30 in MSC Hamlet Room.  Workshop sponsored by the Women’s Resource Centre,  the Nursing Guys Club and the Wellness Centre.

The Bible and Homosexuality: Jewish and Christian Perspectives:  It is commonly assumed that the Hebrew and Christian Scriptures contain a clear and unambiguous condemnation of same-sex
relationships. This lecture gives reasons for questioning that assumption.  Wednesday, 12:00 -1:00 pm, Large Prayer Room MSC 317a.  Workshop sponsored by the Faith and Spirituality Centre of the Wellness Centre.  Light lunch and refreshments will be provided

Thursday February 9
Know your “O”: Orgasm Info For Men. In depth information about men’s bodies will facilitate better, more intense orgasm for you and/or your partner.  Thursday, 1:00 – 2:30 in SU Council Chambers. Workshop sponsored by the Nursing Guys Club, and the Wellness Centre.

Friday February 10
Pap clinic.  A gentle reminder to book your pelvic exam/pap test.  Friday morning will be reserved at  Health Services.
Guys! Pick up your balls!  A friendly reminder to check your testicles for any unusual lumps or thickening.  If you find something, book an appointment with a Doctor at Health Services.
Recommendation from Health Services: Gardasil immunization has now been approved for both males and females.  Reduce your risk of HPV related cancers (cervical, penile, anal, laryngeal) and protect yourself against genital warts.  Set up an appt. with a Doctor. to discuss the benefits…vaccine available at the Health Services Clinic.

For Parents: Talking to your kids about Sexuality.  Identify and explore personal and family values around sexuality. Understand the importance of talking about sexuality with children and youth.   Learn basic strategies to talk with children and youth about sexuality.   Friday 10:00 – 11:30 am.  In Wellness Centre Classroom. Workshop sponsored by Family Residence and the Wellness Centre.

 Gender Diversity for Friends, Allies and Helping Professionals.  Individuals who identify as transsexual, transgender, two spirited, or gender queer express a gender identity that challenges cultural expectations. Hence they are often marginalized, pathologized or disenfranchised.  This interactive workshop will utilize a variety of learning mediums to: (a) support participants increase their understanding of issues facing people with diverse gender expressions; (c) engage participants in deconstructing the gender binary of male/man and woman/female and (b) identify best practices to offer support.  Friday, 12 – 1pm in Wellness Centre classroom.  Workshop sponsored by the Counselling Centre of the Wellness Centre.
